KUUMBA KAMP
AND FESTIVAL
ABOUT KUUMBA KAMP
Kuumba Kamp is a 7-week summer program located at Vine Middle School. Students ages 5 -12 will have the opportunity to be creative, and learn a skill within the arts, as well as the opportunity to present what they’ve learned to the community.
Students will also learn healthy problem-solving strategies, and useful social-emotional coping skills through drum and dance, and together create effective ways to communicate with one another. Using the Choices and Consequences curriculum, students will participate in daily social-emotional learning (SEL) activities that will help them learn about choices and consequences.
Over the course of the summer, they will learn about good choices, consequences, and the simple process to make choices.
THE KUUMBA FESTIVAL
Kuumba Festival is the largest cultural heritage and music festival in East Tennessee that celebrates African Culture in Diaspora! This year marks the 33rd anniversary of Kuumba and its theme is "Uplifting the Legacy of Our Ancestors." This year’s festival will span three days and will showcase live performances from local, regional, and national artists.
The Kuumba Marketplace will host food and merchandise vendors from all over the world. It will also host local and regional music acts, host vendors, and provide students an opportunity to showcase the hard work they have put in during Kuumba Kamp. Kuumba Watoto Dance and Drum ensemble and Indigenous Vibes will perform throughout the festival with amazing sounds and movements of traditional West African Drum and dance by artists of all ages. Each night will end with a live band performance.
The Kuumba Festival was started in 1989 by local Knoxville artists and community activists looking to showcase local African American art and artists sharing, educating, and exposing rich cultural art forms to the Knoxville community.
